Prioritisation

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

I discussed prioritisation (and our use of the espida approach)  in this blog back in December 2009. This continues to be a very important topic and is allied to value / benefits / impact / return on investment / etc.

There is a very useful set of articles on the Enthiosys website that go into quite some detail on a new approach to looking attributes that allow prioritisation of project activities for profit. The material in the three articles is complex, financially-focussed and based round agile project management but is well worth studying by learning & teaching project managers

Prioritisation

When I’ve been asked about material on prioritisation (or prioritization) I’ve pointed enquirers to the JISC sites at http://www.jiscinfonet.ac.uk/infokits/strategy/managing-strategic-activity/prioritisation and at http://www.jiscinfonet.ac.uk/infokits/strategy/managing-strategic-activity/prioritising-activities plus an interesting  post from the SABCONS blog.

However, in what is likely to be my last live staff development session before I retire,  we tried out the espida Approach described as:

The espida Approach is a tool that recasts the relationship between decision-maker and proposer as one of alignment and dialogue: the proposer can effectively communicate intangible outcomes, and the funder receives maximum benefit from investment decisions. The Approach
encapsulates the process surrounding the allocation of resources and offers a consistent and effective approach that benefits all stakeholders in the process.
Through a well-developed process and use of structured Outcome Scorecards and Cost Templates, the espida Approach offers advantages to both decision-makers and project proposers in terms of understanding proposals, ensuring the decision-making process is transparent and based on all relevant information, and allows both sets of stakeholders to communicate effectively, ultimately benefiting the organisation.

We adapted one of the Appendix activities and the session got positive ratings. The holiday scenario used in the espida Training Exercise document had not been well received in a previous trial run.
